In March 2012 The British School of Gran Canaria underwent an inspection by the Independent School Inspectorate (ISI). The full Inspection Report is available on the ISI website (click here to be redirected). you can also download it in PDF format through this link.
The report is a product of the school inspection that took place 20th–23rd March, conducted by ISI, a body approved by the British Governmentand the Department for Education for inspecting schools in England and abroad, as a way of ensuring relevant standards are met by British Schools. Compliance with this rigorous inspection is important for maintaining high standards with our school and is also a prerequisite for membership to the prestigious Council of British International Schools (COBIS).
The report is a fine validation of the school and all those associated with it. In many respects it is a glowing endorsement of our school – reflecting positively on the students, staff, governors and families. Below are highlighted some of the main positives:
- The daily atmosphere of the school ensures that the students feel very happy, secure, confident and at ease within The British School.
- English levels are high and in-line with achievement levels in the U.K., although most students are not native English speakers. In the use of English the students are confident, articulate and prepared to listen, challenge and discuss.
- The quality of teaching within the school is good, and in some areas it is outstanding.
- The quality of relationships within school is ‘a significant feature of the school’ with support, care and respect being the norm. Such relationships extend from within classes, across age groups and with adults of the school.
- Pupils’ attainment throughout the school is judged to be good or appropriate in relation to English national age-related expectations and in-line with International Examination expectations.
- Students and parents are very supportive of the school and positive about the education provided.
- Students’ personal development is supported through excellent guidance, school systems and teachers’ understanding of student needs. They develop self-esteem, responsibility, respectfulness, tolerance and understanding, being well prepared to become global citizens.
- School leadership and management give good educational direction to the school.
There were aspects identified within the report that the school needs to address and we are using these to help shape our new School Development Plan. The school is committed to constant self-improvement and the recommendations of the report have proved useful in guiding this development.
