Appy days

05jul2019-appyThe new Computer Science curriculum for Key Stage 3 has been a huge success this year thanks to the hardworking and enthusiastic learners at BSGC!

As part of the Computer Science curriculum, Miss Price introduced the students to a unique opportunity to enter all year 8 and year 9 students into an App Making Competition. The Apps were created for UK-based charities The Greyhound Trust which help retired racing dogs find a loving home and The Pearl of Africa, a charity that BSGC are looking to support on a long-term basis.

The groups attending the final event were chosen based on their documented evidence, planning and Apps. Parents Raul Espada and Adam Hoque and teacher Mrs Cuthbertson were the judges. They decided on Team Summit and The Elysian Squad.

The final event at The University of Surrey proved to be an excellent learning experience as it was fiercely competed. 120 students from several UK schools were present.

The students enjoyed thinking about expressing their thoughts and feelings, using technology in a positive way with a UK charity called The Samaritans. They learned about various pathways to study computer science, reviewing Apps from other schools and Apps for good and bad, and watched interviews with real computer scientists from Red Hat Linux.

After an exciting but tiring day, Team Summit, represented by Maite Del Campo, who also counted Carlos Villafranca, Marcos Gordillo and Tommaso Tagliapietra amongst their numbers, finished as runners up in our first-ever entry to the Open Schools Coding Competition.

The BSGC students' hard work, dedication and technical skills were recognised by the competition judges, who were also impressed with the students' confidence and excellent English-speaking skills. Next year, this unique opportunity will be open to Year 8; where we hope for further success and relish the opportunity of building on this incredible achievement!
