Welcome to the Infant Department at the British School of Gran Canaria
which is made up of the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2).
Children develop quickly in the early years, and early years practitioners aim to help children have the best possible start to their school life. The Nursery and Reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS) used in England for children between the ages of 3 and 5 years. In Year One and Year Two (children between the ages of 5 and 7) we follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1. Wherever appropriate, subject material is adapted to make it relevant to both to the pupils' needs and our geographical location. An essential part of our programmes of study include trips to museums, galleries, parks, local business's, theatres and areas of natural interest on Gran Canaria. This gives children important first hand learning experiences.
A dedicated team of native English speaking professionals in Tafira and Maspalomas support the learning and well-being of our pupils. We recognise that children are born ready and eager to learn. They are actively encouraged to interact with other people, and things in their learning environment. The three areas outlined in the Characteristics of Effective Learning are as follows:
- playing and exploring
- active learning
- creating and thinking critically
These areas are fundamental to how our children learn and promote the values of our school, encouraging pupils to become lifelong learners.
The Curriculum is taught in English and is based upon seven areas of learning:
(The teaching of Spanish begins in the Reception class and is taught by a native Spanish teacher)
We recognise the importance of active parental involvement in the education of their children. We keep parents updated on the progress of their children, with detailed termly reports. In addition we hold parent information evenings, provide booklets on ways to support and help children. We are always happy to meet with parents to discuss any worries or concerns that they or their children may have about school.
We aim to ensure our pupils are happy, well motivated and have the confidence to achieve. We display pupil work around the classroom and school, share good work in the classroom and in assemblies. Stickers and house points are given to pupils as instant rewards for achievement, effort, behaviour and being polite and helpful around school. Each term pupils are identified for outstanding achievement and effort and rewarded with medals and certificates in a special assembly which parents are invited to attend. These strategies alongside small class sizes and excellent staff to pupil ratios help to make the Infant Departments in both Tafira and Maspalomas very successful in preparing students for Key Stage two and their future learning. We are very proud of our school and our pupils' achievements.
